Giverny Capital Asset Management, LLC (“GCAM”) is a partnership between Giverny Capital Inc. of Montreal and David Poppe, the former president and chief executive officer of Ruane, Cunniff & Goldfarb, LLC. David manages the GCAM portfolio for clients and works closely with the Giverny Capital team on investment ideas and stock research.
David spent nearly 20 years at Ruane, Cunniff, taking on a variety of responsibilities: analyst, portfolio manager, co-manager and director of Sequoia Fund and, from 2016-2018, Chairman and CEO of the firm. He supervised Ruane’s research team of about 10 stock analysts for a decade. In 2010, David and his Sequoia co-manager Bob Goldfarb were named equity portfolio managers of the year by the mutual fund ratings service Morningstar, in recognition of Sequoia’s outstanding long-term track record.
David and his Giverny Capital partners are strong believers in the merits of owning a concentrated portfolio of outstanding companies. GCAM expects to hold between 20 and 30 stocks in most economic environments and envisions low portfolio turnover. We see ourselves as business owners. When we find a top-flight management team at the helm of a strong business model, we expect to hold it for years. Because GCAM and Giverny Capital share ideas, research and investment philosophy, the firms may own many of the same stocks. You can find more information about Giverny Capital at www.givernycapital.com under the US Investors tab.
Outside of GCAM, David serves on the board of directors of Central Securities Corp., a closed-end fund. He’s a member of the New York Advisory Board of the Trust for Public Land, which promotes the creation and protection of land for people, including greater access to parks, trails, playgrounds and open space. He’s married with one son and holds a BA from Columbia University, 1986.
